ROMAN SCHOOL, 16th century, Alessandro Cesati (active 1538-1564), Dido, Queen of Carthage, North Africa, bronze medal 52mm, (70.98 g), obv. Queen Dido bust to right, legend in Greek **DIDW BASILISSA*, rev. view of Carthage, with galleys in harbour before it, to left trace of legend **KAPXHDWN*, (Kress Collection No.368 [p.69]). All known specimens appear to be cast as is this example, original was die struck, double struck on a very large oversized flan, holed, otherwise nearly extremely fine and very rare.
