BERKSHIRE, Reading, I.B. Monk's gold forty shillings or two pound piece, 1812, by Halliday for Edward Thomason, obv. crowned bust of king Alfred left legend around ALFRED 1812 PIGNORA CERTA PETIS DO PIGNORA CERTA, rev. reads "40 Shillings Berks Token standard gold 6 dwts - 18 gr. Reading payable in Bk. Notes at 6.s the DWT by I.B. Monck Esqre." Monck was proprietor of his own bank and was MP for Reading (D.1). About as struck with mirror surfaces, FDC with much original mint bloom and extremely rare, probably the finest known.

Ex Colin Pitchfork Collection sold in Noble Numismatics Sale 67 (lot 688), previously Baldwin Sale 15 13th October 1997 (lot 100) and Davissons Ltd., Sale November 23 1999 (lot 371) with ticket together with earlier ticket.
