ORBIANA, wife of Severus Alexander, (married A.D.225), silver denarius, issue struck at Rome c.225 A.D, (2.73 g), obv. SALL BARBIA ORBIANA AVG around, diademed bust draped to right, rev. around CONCORDI A AVGG, Concordia seated to left, holding patera and double cornucopiae, (S.8191, RIC 319, RSC 1). Toned, off-centred on the obverse and uneven surface, otherwise good very fine and scarce.
Ex D.J.Foster Collection and previously from Spink Noble Sale 44 (lot 2609).
A special marriage issue for Orbiana and Severus Alexander. Orbiana's marriage coinage all appears to be issued at the time of the marriage. Julia Mamaea banished Orbiana, her daughter in law, shortly after when her father was implicated in an attempted coup.
