INDIA, Provisional Government of Free India, a British India silver rupee dated 1942 with obverse counterstamp, 'P.G.A.H./1943' (Provisional Government of Azad Hind [Free India]). Very fine.

The Provisional Government of Free India, or, more simply, Free India (Azad Hind), was established in Singapore in 1943 by Indian nationalists-in-exile with the support of Japan. It was a part of a political movement originating in the 1940s outside of India with the purpose of allying with Axis powers to free India from British Rule. Its members fought with the Japanese against the allies, including British Indian units.
