HMS NELSON FIRE BUCKET, in brass coopered oak, with gilt lettering 'HMS Nelson/Keel Laid 1798/120Guns/Launched 1814/Out of Coms/1898' (Ht 40cm, dia 28cm).

The 'Nelson' was passed to the Victorian Government on permanent loan on 7 February 1867. She was to be used as a training ship for boys and after her arrival on 4 February 1868 she was the colony's major naval ship for some years. Source: Colin Jones, 'Australian Colonial Navies', Australian War Memorial, Canberra' 1986. Jones notes that the 'Nelson's keel was laid down in December 1809, and not as stated on the bucket.
