USA, 1936 COLUMBIA, South Carolina, sesquicentennial commemorative silver half dollar. Almost brilliant, uncirculated.

In a slab by Smart Collect as MS64. Mintage was 9,007 for 1936 from all mints 25,023 were issued. Souvenir half dollars were authorized to help finance the extensive celebrations marking the sesquicentennial of the founding of Columbia in 1786. The obverse bears the goddess of Justice with sword and scales between two capitol buildings. Palmetto tree, the state emblem, surrounded by stars is the reverse device. The half dollar was attractive in its simplicity, and few numismatists thought to criticise it.
