SWITZERLAND, Basel, silver taler, 1624, (27.76 g), obv. MONETA. NOVA. VRBIS. BASILEENSIS. 1624*, arms in quatrefoil, four inward lis at angles, rev. DOM .CONSERVA. NOS. IN. PACE, crowned double eagle, (D.4604, KM.79.2). Edge flaw, otherwise nearly very fine, scarce.

Ex Alan Jordan Collection.

This design with minor variations was issued irregularly between 1542-52, came with more elaborate arms in 1621, and again issued irregularly between 1622-39. The reverse legend states 'Lord preserve us in peace. The Stand of Basel had joined the Eidgenossenschaft in 1501. The object on the arms of the city (and canton) is the head of a bishop's crosier.
