The involved history of the Brunswick duchies, lying in north central Germany between the Elbe and Weser rivers, begins about the time of Charlemagne. The Grubenhagen line was created from the old house of Brunswick in 1286. Philip I (1486-1508-1551) had four sons who ruled jointly and who died off one by one until only Philip II remained. At his death in 1596 the duchy went to Wolfenbttel.
