James Cowism was in Lt Col Canning's Coy. At the Battle of Waterloo in 1 Corps, 2nd Brigade, under Lt Col Francis Hepburn.

A light company of the 2nd Battalion 3rd Regt of Foot Guards cloaked itself in glory during the Battle of Hougoumont. The Duke of Wellington declared openly that the outcome of the Battle of Waterloo was decided by the closing of the gates at Hougoumont. This dramatic action was pivotal in the victory at Waterloo.
