TIBERIUS, (A.D. 14-37), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 36-37, (27.17 gm), obv. hexastyle temple with wings, various gods around and on pediment, rev. TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVST P M TR POT XXXIIX around large SC, with NCAPR countermarked in field, (S.1766, RIC 67, BMC 133, c.79). Worn, otherwise very good and rare.

The temple at the northern end of the Forum, was restored by Tiberius during the reign of Augustus and rededicated in AD 10. The building housed many antique statues, hence its elaborately decorated representation on this coin type. The countermark, one of trhe commonest of all Roman countermarks is read as 'Nero Caesar Augustus probavit' and was probably applied during the early years of Nero's reign when the senatorial mint was idle.
