Estimate $140
Bid at live.noble.com.au
SOLD $100

SABINA, wife of Hadrian, (died A.D.136-7), silver denarius, issued 134-6, (3.02 grams), Rome mint, obv. diademed and draped bust to right of Sabina, with hair knotted at back of head, around SABINA AVGVSTA, rev. Concordia seated left, holding patera and sceptre, around CONCOR DIA AVG, (S.-, RIC H391, RSC 24, BMC 932). Very fine and scarce.

Concordia is represented here as the goddess of agreement, understanding and harmony. This contradicts the historical tradition of Sabina's marriage to Hadrian as loveless, childless and miserable.
