TRAJAN, (A.D. 98-117), silver denarius, issued 113, Rome mint, (3.312 grams), obv. laureate bust draped to right of Trajan, around IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS vI P P, rev. VIA TRAIANA in exergue, female figure (Via Traiana) reclining to right holding wheel and branch, around S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI, (S.3173, RIC 266, RSC 648). Toned, good fine/fine, scarce.

This records the construction in 109 of the Via Traiana, an important highway replacing the Via Appia as the preferred route between Beneventum and the port city of Brundusium on the Adriatic coast.
