CENTENNIAL INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, Melbourne, 1888, in gold (38mm, 18ct, 46.2gms) by Melbourne Mint - Stokes & Martin (C.1888/8), inscribed around edge 'R.W. THe Mayor of Melb. William Cain Esq. J.P. Ex.Comr.' Contact marks on fields, otherwise extremely fine and rare.

William Cain (1831-1914). Born on the Isle of Man, building contractor associated with many important projects including the Melbourne Town Hall. He was Mayor of Melbourne 1886-87, Chairman of the 1888 Exhibition Building Committee. The Isle of Man issued a postal stamp commemorating William Cain and the Melbourne Exhibition Building in 1984.
