SIR JOHN FRANKLIN, R.N., portrait medal in white metal (28mm) by Stothard, Royal Polytechnic Institution, London, series to great men (BHM 2101, Eimer 1349). Extremely fine.

Ex Spink Australia Sale 24 (lot 1024). Sir John Franklin (1786-1847), rear-admiral, Arctic explorer and Lieutenant Governor of Tasmania. He was appointed to the latter position in 1837 and after six fairly turbulent years, he returned to England. He wrote 'A Narrative of Some Passages in the History of Van Diemen's Land during the last three years of Sir John Franklin's Administration in the Colony' before setting off in H.M.S.Erebus to search for the North West Passage. It was on this voyage that he died in 1847 aged 59.
