ATTICA, Athens, (166-57 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.616 grams), issued 168-7 B.C., (Thompson date) but probably 136-5 B.C. (revised chronology), obv. head of Athena Parthenos to right wearing triple-crested Athenian helmet, ornamented with Pegasus, within dotted border, rev. owl standing to right, head facing, in erect posture, on prostrate amphora, **G* on amphora, legend across **A QE, to left HPA to right across API **STOF/ DHMH*, club, lion's skin and bow in case, below **GL*, all within wreath, (cf.S.2555, Thompson 332a [same obverse die, new reverse dies]). Slightly off centre reverse, otherwise good very fine and rare (unpublished dies).
Ex CNG Auction Sale XXXII, December 7, 1994 (lot 1274). A rare issue. Thompson knew of 84 examples of this year from all dies, issue struck from 12 obverse and 56 reverse dies.
