NETHERLANDS, House of Orange, Maurice as Prince of Orange (1579-1652), silver medal, cast 35mm, 1602, by G.V. B(ijlaer), obv. armoured and draped bust right, rev. Orange tree growing from a stump, (Eimer 75, MI i, 182; v.Loon I 553, Forrer Vol.7 Sup., p.407 [mentions this medal]; attached to blue ribbon. Toned, nearly extremely fine and rare.

This medal commemorates the capture of Grave by Prince Maurice, as well as his previous successes at Breda, Lingen and Meurs. He was the son of William the Silent and is here represented in the form of an orange shoot, springing from an old trunk, which has grown into a flourishing tree.
