THE ROYAL SOCIETY (OF LONDON) COPLEY MEDAL (1737) IN GOLD (43MM) BY J.S. Tanner (M.I. ii, 522/81; Eimer 540) reverse inscribed 'Sir Geo. Schuckburgh Evelyn Bart/ MDCCXCVIII' (1798). In red leather case of issue, nearly uncirculated with attractive tone.

Ex L. Richard Smith Collection. Evelyn, Sir George Shuckburgh. The Copley gold medal is the Royal Society's highest award for the advancement of medical science. Sir George Shuckburgh Evelyn, scientist, was awarded the Copley medal for communications published in The Philosophical Transactions. Captain James Cook was awarded a Copley gold medal in 1776 for his address on the prevention and cure of scurvy.
