QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT, Brisbane, one pound, dated 1 July 1897, (date fully printed), numbered A/1 825796, signed by Under Secretary Treasury and countersigned by uncertain signature, on paper, imprint of 'Perkins Bacon & Co. London', vignette on upper left of State arms, and ornamental oval tablet with ONE on upper right and lower left, and green ONE in multi circle tablet across note, states below, 'I Promise to pay the Bearer on Demand One Pound Sterling, Brisbane. For the Queensland Government', on back head of Queen Victoria in geometrical pattern, '1' in oval each side, green and black on white/blue and white, (Vort-Ronald, Type one, comments on bank and type p.199-203, This Note noted p.203, similar issued note [but five pounds], illustrated Fig. 210 [p.201]). Many folds and creases, otherwise fine and extremely rare.

After the financial disasters of the 1890's the Queensland Government had to issue its own superscribed notes (see the earlier lot No. ), to meet the urgent necessity to provide currency acceptable to the public. After 1893 the Queensland Government decided to continue to issue its own notes. This note is the noted specimen by Vort-Ronald, it had limited circulation and continued to be issued until 1910 and remained the only notes in pre-Federation Australia issued [and backed] by a State Government.
