SHAH JAHAN I, (A.H. 1037-1068, A.D.1628-1658), square Gold mohur, (10.54 grams), struck at Nagar Pattan Deo mint, issued A.H. 1047? (A.D. 1637-8), No Regnal Year, obv. Kalima, square borders with ornamental quatrefoil corners, margins as usual, date 104, rev. 7 top margin, mint reading on LHS, ornamental quatrefoil corners, rulers name, (BMC 577 same dies, Indian Museum Calcutta 865, KM. SAC -). Very fine and extremely rare.

The mint reading is better read on the illustrated BMC catalogue specimen from the same dies, (where it was described as mint, date obliterated). The mint may be the same with an expanded version of the rare Pattan Deo mint which struck in 1047 and with Regnal year 10 only. Pattan Deo mint silver rupees are round but otherwise very similar but without the Nagar prefix to the mint name. The date is a curious one with 104 on the obverse (also read by Wright in IMC as this), but has a 7 on the top of the reverse (a continuation of date!) to make 1047. A similar specimen was illustrated in a Glendining sale in June 1937 (lot 115). The issue is not described in Krause, South Asian Coins and a comment in IMC states that Rogers was of the opinion that the coin was not genuine and Wright the author notes also, it was not free from suspicion. The coin however is now believed to be a genuine gold mohur from the reign of Shah Jahan issued from the mint of Nagar Pattan Deo.
