U.S.A., war with Mexico 1846-48, South Carolina, service medal in silver (48mm) for the Palmetto Regiment (South Carolina Volunteers), inscribed to 'James S. Moore.' Fine and rare.

The State authorized this service medal on 13 December 1848, gold for officers, silver to non-commissioned officers and enlisted men. The medals were produced and distributed by a Charlestown, S.C., Company, Messrs Gregg, Hayden & Co. Total of 419 issued in gold and silver. Distribution took place 1852-3. The awards were distributed cased without any provision for wearing them. There are 39 known (including this piece) of which 3 are in institutions. (This information kindly supplied by John J.
