DENARIUS ROME MINT (STRUCK C. 46 B.C.) Obv. COS TERT DICT ITER, head of Ceres right wreathed with corn Rev. AVGVR above simpulum, sprinkler, capis and lituus, PONT MAX below (Craw.467/1a;Syd.1023;Sear 356). Struck on an oval flan from rusted dies, two old digs on obverse, good very fine.
This coinage was probably struck to pay Caesar's successful legions after the battle of Thaspus on 6 April 46 B.C. The head of Ceres represents Africa and its corn producing wealth.
