IKHSHIDIDS OF EGYPT AND SYRIA, Muhammad ibn Tughj, (A.H. 323-334) (A.D. 935-946), gold dinar, Filastin mint (Palestine), A.H. 333, = A.D. 944-945, with additional field inscriptions including ruler's name, (A.674, M.-, SNA Tubingen 125). Weak in places, nearly very fine and a rare ruler and mint.

The Ikhshidid dynasty was of Central Asian origin, who had control of Egypt and Syria from 935 to 969, as virtually autonomous vassals of the Abbasid Caliph. A total of five rulers exercised power in this period. After the death of Mohammed ibn Tughj real power was vested in the hands of the Nubian slave-regent Kafur who later succeeded in making himself Amir. They collapsed soon after with little real resistance offered to the Fatimid conquest.
