MUWAHHIDS, (Almohades), Anonymous issue, square silver dirham, Fas mint (Fes in Morocco), issued from A.H. 550's to 668 = A.D. 1160's-1269, (A.497, Hazard 1096, M.418-419, BMC 130-3, Lavoix 746-748). Of fine style, nearly extremely fine.

The Almohades introduced the square dirhem, normally without the name of the ruler, together with gold dinars and fractions. The square silver dirhem was also used by the Hafsid dynasty was based on a standard of about 1.5 grams. All coins of the Almohades and their Maghrebi successors until the rise of the Sa'dians in the mid 16th century are invariably undated.
