SOLD $200

AL-MUSTA'SIM, (A.H. 640-656) (A.D. 1242-1258), multiple gold dinar (7.55 grams), with caliph's name, Madinat al Salam mint (Baghdad mint), A.H. 640 = A.D. 1242-1243, with additional field inscriptions, (cf.A.275, BMC 503, Lavoix 1317-1318, cf.M.266-7). Weak in places with full flans, slightly crimped, otherwise very fine and rare.

This is the last of the Abbasid Rulers. The denomination is uncertain and is often noted as a heavy dinar, they were apparently not struck with regular values but were rather of the nature of ingots of variable weight and valued in proportion to weight, they had a usual weight range of 6.5 to 9.5 grams, but examples are known both heavier and lighter.

Estimate / sale price does not include buyer's premium (currently 22% including GST) which is added to hammer price. All bids are executed on the understanding that the Terms & Conditions of sale have been read and accepted. For information on grading and estimates please refer to the Buying at Auction advice.
