GROUP OF FOUR: Military Medal (GVR); Queen's South Africa Medal 1899 - four bars - Cape Colony; Orange Free State; Transvaal; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal. 5118 Sjt. J.G. Hornig 60 Aust Inf. Impressed. Very fine.
MM: CG 27 Aug1917: - 'On March 14th 1917 in the front line system north of GUEDECOURT, Sgt Hornig, whilst in charge of a post of 6 men, displayed great bravery and initiative. His post was heavily shelled and under machine gun fire during the day till almost blown out. Sgt Hornig with great coolness evacuated his men to a safer spot and manned the post himself. After the shelling ceased one of the men returned to the post and found the sergeant wounded in the leg. This action is worthy of recognition for example set to his men.' With biographical details.John George Hornig served in the 8th Contingent NZMR during the South African War.
