SEVERUS ALEXANDER, (A.D. 222-235), sestertius, Rome mint, issued 222-229, obv. laureate bust to right, rev. VIRTVS AVG, Virtus standing to right, leaning on shield and holding inverted spear, (cf.S.2271, cf.RIC 623). Somewhat polished, good fine/fine, extremely rare and apparently unpublished.

The published reverse for this issue is VIRTVS AVGVSTI, but clearly this coin has the shortened legend which has previously only been noted on silver and gold issues.

All bids are executed on the understanding that the Terms & Conditions of sale have been read and accepted. For information on grading and estimates please refer to the Buying at Auction advice.
