COUNT ALEXANDER SUVAROW, bronzed proof medal in copper, by C.H. Kuchler, 48mm, (59.8 grams), 1799, obv. Suvarow bust to right, rev. Suvarow as Mars standing left, raising Italy and a fallen French soldier, dated 1799, (Pollard 17 [p.287-288]). Red-brown patina, FDC.

Ex. A.H. Baldwin, London in 1994 with ticket. Count Alexander Suvarow (1729-1800) led the campaign against France in Italy, for which he was given the title prince of Italy by the Czar. The early part of the campaign almost cleared French troops from Italy, but subsequent reverses caused his disgrace. He died in Moscow on May 18, 1800.
