DAVISON'S NILE MEDAL, bronzed proof medal in copper, by C.H. Kuchler, 48mm, (40.3 grams), 1798, obv. Peace standing left on rock, with shield bearing Nelson's portrait, rev. scene of the naval battle in Aboukir Bay, the French at anchor, the British fleet going into action, dated 1798, (Pollard 15 [p.284-286], Eimer 890, BHM 447, Fearon 249.3, MH 482). Dark brown patina, nearly FDC.

Ex. A.H. Baldwin, London in 1994. Boulton was commissioned to prepare the medal by Alexander Davison, who was Nelson's prize agent after the battle of the Nile, 1st August 1798. Davison intended to give a specimen of this medal to everyone who served in the action. Gold medals were given admirals and captains, silver to officers, gilt bronze to petty officers, bronze to all others. 6000 were produced in bronze and 525 in copper.
