SOLD $80

SIR THOMAS MOORE (EXECUTED 1535), British Museum electrotype of the original (RR on edge), unsigned, 58mm, (67.4 grams), obv. Bust to right of Thomas More (Chancellor of England), rev. cyprus tree just felled, with axe in stump, (M.I. 23 [p.35-6]). Original cast in the coarse, the electrotype similar, good very fine and very rare as an electrotype, the original believed unique.

Ex. Spink & Son, London with its ticket. Sir Thomas Moore was beheaded on July 6 1535 for refusing to take the oath of supremacy. The reverse typifies More as a cypress tree, which has been choped down by the stroke of the axe, but whose odour is more fragrant after death than even during life.
