SOLD $450

HENRY VIII (1509-1547), Complimentary medal, silver cast and chased medal, by Hans Daucher of Augsburg, 58mm, (82.8 grams), 1526, obv. facing bust wearing large hat and cloak, REX ANGLIE, rev. crowned portcullus, (M.I. 17 [p.31], see Henry Grunthal, 'A German Medal of Henry VIII of England, ANS Museum Notes, 1958, pp.181-3). A splendid restitution, possibly a contemporary issue of good style, extremely fine and excessively rare.

Ex. Glendining's London sale July 10, 1991 (lot 1). Georg Habich, 'die deutschen Schaumunzen des XVI, Jahrhunderts', Munich, 1929 I, No.56 (p.25) and subseqent discussion in another article believes five specimens with this obverse exist and suggests that this two sided medal with the portcullus reverse was issued after 1620. Grunthal notes that only two specimens survive with the portcullus reverse.
