SEVERUS ALEXANDER, (A.D. 222-235), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 228 (19.8 grams), obv. laureate head of Severus alexander to right, around IMP SEV ALE XANDER AVG, rev. Mars standing to left with foot on prow holding spear and parazonium, around P M TR P VII COS II P P, S C across field, (cf.S.2256, RIC 477, C.344, BMC 515). Attractive green patination, strong portrait and large flan, very fine/good fine and scarce.

Ex. Sir Charles Oman collection, Christie's, February 7, 1968 (lot 181 part) and a duplicate from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts with their distinctive ticket.
