NEW ZEALAND EXHIBITION, 1865, Honorary medal, struck in bronze (64.5mm), (M.1865/1), no maker (see below), in case of issue (this damaged); also a uniface plastic impression of the reverse of the same medal, in a case by Stewart Dawson & Co. Both virtually uncirculated. (2)
Morel rates the bronze medal as R5 (rare 11 to 25 known).^^Research previously undertaken for a report on 'The First New Zealand Exhibition' has determined that the above medal was designed by Mr Joseph Shepherd Wyon, Chief Engraver of the Seals and that Mr Joseph Moore, a noted medallist and die-sinker, cut the dies. A total of 55 silver and 87 bronze medals were struck and then the commissioners of the exhibition at a meeting held on 27 Spril 1865 decided that a one-off gold medal should be struck for presentation to Alfred Eccles F.R.C.S., a commissioner, and also the author of the 'Plan of the Exhibition'.^^With research.
