Sale 132 Preface

Wednesday, 01 March 2023

Welcome to Sale 132, our first for the year 2023. Once more it is a wide-ranging sale totalling 4585 lots, of which 1184 comprise the online only sale closing from 9.30 am on Monday 27th March. One highlight is the extensive collection of Scottish paper money formed by a Sydney collector listed in 374 lots of the online only sale.

Another highlight is the virtually complete completion of Australian gold coins, 1852- 1931, formed by the late David Ross, largely included in the 5th session at 7.30pm on Tuesday 28th March (AEDT). That session which commences with proclamation coins includes a nicely preserved NSW fifteen pence of dump, 1813 (lot 1879 est. $30,000).

In the second evening session you will find a previously unknown example of The William the Conqueror mule type 7/8 PAXS penny (lot 2896 est. $5,000) and a George I (Prince Elector) guinea, 1714 (lot 2541, est. $7,500). Followed soon after by long proof sets of 1902, 1937 and many of Elizabeth II from 1981-2003.

The first three sessions include one of the largest offerings of decimal gold, platinum and silver issues we have had, much of it from a ninety year old collector.

A good series of Australian Historical medals is offered at 2.30pm on Wednesday 29th March with many rarely seen small gold commemoratives of exhibitions in the second half of the nineteenth century, highlighted by the Agricultural Society of NSW Metropolitan Exhibition (1874) (lot 2541, est. $3,000). Medals presented to Sir J.M. Dunningham, Minister for Labour and Industry are also noteworthy (lots 2626, 2647).

World coins once again include interesting Chinese issues from 1000BC on; Tibet and Nepal from the Dr. V.J.A Flynn Collection, Indian Mogul and British, also some interesting lots relating to minting and banking from the Mark E. Freehill Collection (lots 3052, 3439).

Australian Bank notes include a rare group of ten pound notes from 1943 in consecutive numbers, a total of 52 in uncirculated condition.

The final day, Friday 31st March, sees the sale of Ancient Greek and Roman coins, followed by orders, decorations and medals. The entire collection formed by the late law academic Dr John Bennett AM is included. An NGS clasp Port Spergui is offered for the first time (Lot 4229, est. $20,000) and comes from a Sydney family. A star of courage Police group (lot 4539; est. $20,000) represents a rare opportunity to purchase such an important bravery group.

We look forward to being of assistance at the viewing and hope you are successful in your intended purchases.
