GORDIAN III, (A.D. 238-244), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 242-4 (18.894, grams), obv. laureate draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III to right, around IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, rev. around VICTORIA AETERNA, SC across field, Victory standing left, leaning on shield and holding a palm, under shield a captive, (cf.S.2507, RIC 338, C.354). On a round flan, with a light brown patina, good very fine and a scarce reverse type.

Ex Cornelius C. Vermeule III Collection, sold in Triton III (lot 1722 part) for the benefit of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts with his ticket.
