ROMAN SCHOOL, 16th century, Alessandro Cesati (active 1538-1564), Dido, Queen of Carthage, North Africa, bronze medal 43mm, obv. Queen Dido bust to right, legend in Greek **DIDW BASILISSA*, rev. view of Carthage, with galleys in harbour before it, to left trace of legend **KARCHDWN*, (Kress Collection No.368 [p.69]). All known specimens appear to be cast as is this example, original was die struck, nearly extremely fine and very rare.

Ex Karl Kress, auction Sale 131, 16th November 1964, with ticket, stating details and 'lot via Forrer/Schulman, 67DM = Å“6' and Noble Numismatics Sale 60 (lot 2571).
