JOHN II, (1118-1143), gold hyperpyron (scyphate), Thessalonica mint, (4.298 grams), obv. Christ enthroned facing, wearing nimbus, IC XC to left and to right, rev. facing half length figures of the Virgin nimbate on right and John to left, holding between them the patriarchal cross, above Virgin **QU*, to right MP monogram, legend to left **IW DE*C**POTH*, (S.1947, Hendy Pl.9,10, BMC 15-16, 18-19, R.2096). Very fine/nearly extremely fine and scarce.

The issue is similar to that from Constantinople mint but struck on smaller (less than 28mm flans) and thicker flans.
