LESBOS, Mytilene, c.521-478 B.C., electrum hekte (2.502 grams), Bodenstedt dates 497 B.C., obv. head of roaring lion to right, rev. incuse head of calf to right, (S.4240 [£600]; Bodenstedt 13 [same dies as obv. d/ rev. i, Boston 1679ff., BMC 17ff., Weber 5603-4). Very fine/extremely fine and scarce.

A similar example in our sale 72 (Lot 4513) realised $1400. Bodenstedt notes 140 examples of this spectacular type from 22 obverse dies. Many examples known are in published collections.
