COLONIAL NSW POLICE HANDCUFFS, c1840s, D shaped wrist cuffs joined by a small, round link at either side of central lock-style link, with locking mechanism released by turning key in a keyhole on either cuff, stamped HIATT on each cuff and number 124, with key also stamped HIATT on both sides and on one side the number 356. Very fine.
Thomas Griffin Hiatt established his business at Birmingham, England in c1818. He was related to Thomas Griffin of Thomas Griffin & Co founded in the late 18th century.
These Handcuffs are attributed to James Watson who was sentenced to Transportation for Life and sent to the Colony of NSW arriving in 1818. He was granted a Conditional Pardon in 1838 and later appointed a Special Constable.
