SOUTH AUSTRALIAN COMPANY, one pound, Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, July 1st 1836, unissued specimen note, not numbered, no imprint but with counterfoil, (Samuel Stephens) Colonial Manager but not signed, but cancelled in the signature area, (illustrated by David Briggs, p.156, this note also illustrated Vort Ronald Colonial Currency & Promissory Notes p.58). Extremely fine and excessively rare, the only example known in private hands and of outstanding historical importance and rarity.
The South Australian Company later traded as the South Australian Banking Company and the Bank of South Australia. The Kingscote notes were the first issued by South Australia.
