GORDIAN III, (A.D. 238-244), gold aureus, Rome mint, issued 241 - 243, (4.89 g), obv. laureate bust right draped and cuirassed, around IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, rev. PM TR P IIII COS II P P, around, Gordian standing to right with parazonium and globe, (cf.S.8585, RIC -, C.-, Calico = Hunt Collection June 22, 1990 [lot 797] only reported example). Large but damaged flan at edge of coin and edge rather wavy, otherwise extremely fine and extremely rare.
