NEW ZEALAND, Troopship Card Currency, issued on the M.S. Sobieski for one penny, c1940, blue cardboard, 'one penny New Zealand Currency redeemable only during the voyage for which issued' No. 186, stamp dated on back 22.1.1940, together with circular red ship stamp (Sutherland 273 [p193-4]; Robb p54; Schwan-Boling 4574 ). Fine and very rare.

In order to meet a shortage of metallic currency on troopships conveying New Zealand troops to Egypt in 1940, a series of coloured 'New Zealand Currency' cards were printed on board the ships for various denominations.
