GROUP OF FOUR TO WWI POW: Queen's South Africa Medal 1899 (type 3 reverse), - three clasps - Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902; 1914-15 Star; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19. 39752 Tpr: A.V.Temby. Scottish Horse on first medal, 355 Pte A.V.Temby. 3/L.H.Rgt. A.I.F. on second medal, 355 L/Cpl A.V.Temby. 3/L.H.Rgt. A.I.F. on last two medals. All medals impressed. Court mounted, very fine.

Together with fibre dog tag and an aluminium dog tag on chain; Scottish Horse 1900 voided privately made brass hat badge; trench art brass Middle Eastern blade-shaped butter knife, engraving decorated, on one side, 'Souvenir/Le-Guerre', on other side, 'From Vic.Temby/16th Bn (late) 3.A.L.H.' Recruits for Scottish Horse. In his book, Murray states, 'In addition to the Australian Contingents, authority was given for the enrolment of 250 men for the Marquis of Tullibardine's Scottish Horse, in South Africa. These men were selected by the acting Assistant Adjutant-General, Victoria, and handed over to Lieut Colonel Creagh, who acted for the Marquis of Tullibardine. A large portion of those chosen were men who had passed all tests for the 5th Victorian Contingent, but who were thrown out in the ballot.' Albert Victor Temby, farmer at Lower Bright, age 21, born at Magill, South Australia; Emb.20Aug1901; served in E Sqn, 2nd Scottish Horse until time expired in Johannesburg on 20Mar1902; re-engaged until service terminated 06Jul1902; Enl.24Aug1914 in AIF, B Sqn 3LHR; Emb.22Oct1914; transferred to 16Bn; 11Apr1917 reported missing in France; captured at Reincourt; Casualty List No 314 reported him as wounded (GSW left shoulder) and a prisoner of war; reported interned at Z3605 Soltau, Hannover, Germany, later exchanged to internment at Edelwiss Hotel, Murren, Switzerland; RTA 06Jun1918; Disch.15Aug1918; died at Cheltenham, South Australia, 06Dec1958.
