QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899 TO A QUEENSLAND VET, (type 2 reverse). Civ:Vet:Surg: F.A.Nock, A.V.D. Impressed. Extremely fine.

Ex I.S.Wright (Sydney), February 2000. Together with multi-ringed metal shoulder board with three gilt and enamel pips (Captain) and title in brass, AVD, and two small gilt buttons (QVC) Army Veterinary Dept; horse riding crop and thin cane, both with brass decorative pommels and both with damage; three large photos when in England, one in polo team and one in uniform; three framed letters, 1900, from General Sir Dighton Macnaghten Probyn, Comptroller & Treasurer to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales, by his own hand-writing to Nock asking him to write his war experiences in a volume sent by the Princess of Wales. Frank A.Nock born at Toowoomba 08Jun1873, Veterinary Surgeon of Elbana, Wickham Terrace, Brisbane was a keen huntsman and prominent member of Brisbane Polo Club. He left Gladstone on 25Feb1900 in charge of 615 horses sent to South Africa as remounts on the Dutch owned Folmina with only 15 horses dying on the 53 day trip to Table Bay arriving 06Apr1900. He then joined the Veterinary and Remount Dept of the Imperial Service examining up to 800 horses a day to be used as remounts. He treated horses at various remount camps around Capetown, Green Point and Maitland before he was struck down with enteric fever and sent to England for convalesence. While there, he was invited by the Prince and Princess of Wales to stay at Babingley Convalesence House at Sandringham. While there he drove the Princess of Wales's greys. With research.
