CARACALLA, (A.D. 198-217), gold aureus, issued 216, Rome mint, (6.46 gm), obv. laureate bust to right of Caracalla, draped and cuirassed seen from behind, around ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, rev. lion radiate walking to left, thunderbolt in jaws, around P M TR P XVIIII COS IIII P P, (S.6721, RIC 283a, C.366). Minor scratch on obverse, large broad flan, otherwise nearly extremely fine and very rare.
