CALIGULA AND GERMANICUS, (A.D. 37-41), gold aureus, Lugdunum mint, issued A.D. 40, (7.73 grams), obv. laureate head of Caligula to right, around C CAESAR AVG PON M TR POT III COS III, rev. Germanicus head to r., around, GERMANICVS CAES P C CAES AVG GERM, (cf.S.1814, RIC 25, Banti and Simonetti 6-7 [p.23, Vol.XII], BMC 26, C.6). Several minor edge knocks, good very fine or better and very rare.

These issues by Caligula bearing Germanicus name and portrait were struck nearly twenty years after Germanicus death. Caligula was his son, one of nine children of Germanicus and Agrippina Senior.
