IONIA, Chios, (c. 431-410 B.C.), silver drachm, (3.550 grams), obv. Sphinx seated to left reversed B behind, in front amphora surmounted by a bunch of grapes, rev. quadripartite incuse square, (cf.S.4601, BMC 19 [p.330], SNG Lockett 2859 [This Coin]). Toned, very fine and rare.

Ex Jean Elsen, List 213, December 2000 No.66 with their ticket, and previously from the collections S. Pozzi Naville Sale I, 14 March 1921 (lot 2535) and the Collection of R.C. Lockett Glendining Auction Sale 21 February 1961 (lot 2337).
