ITALY, Lucania, Metapontum, (c.400-350 B.C.), silver nomos, stater or didrachm, (6.840 grams), obv. female head of Demeter to right with by a fillet wearing an ear-ring, rev. corn ear, to left [M]ETA**PONT[INW]* on a raised cartouche, conical helmet with hanging chin strap above the leaf on right, (cf.S.409, Noe 529 [p.88 same dies], BMC 126, SNG Lockett 402 [same dies], McClean 975 (same dies), Hunterian 47 [same dies]). Toned, very fine and a rare type.

Ex Spink Numismatic Circular July 1999 (No.2729). The coin is of light weight which may be due to plating, but it shows no evidence of such.
