MACEDON, Mende, c.460-425 B.C., Silver tetradrachm, 16.02 grams, Obv. bearded Dionysos reclining to l., on ass to r., holding a cantharus, to r. a Silenus figure to r., with thyrsos and wine-skin, dotted border, Rev. MEN **D*A I ON around vine with five grape clusters within linear square frame all within shallow incuse square, (S.1408 £2500, Noe Group 2, No.46 (p.22, Pl.VI, MN&M No.27 who records 7 examples from these dies, probably including this example), SNG ANS 322 (Pl.13), Pozzi Sale No.787 (P.45, Pl.XXVI), ACNAC Dewing 1041 (Pl.57, similar dies), Price (Coins of the Macedonians) Pl.VI, 33). Porous surface, otherwise very fine and very rare.
