SICILY, Messana, (475-471 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.998 grams), obv. biga of mules driven to right by seated male charioteer, in exergue bay leaf, rev. MESSE N I O N (some letters reversed), hare running to right, (cf.S.843 [£650], cf.Caltabiano 106/114 [cf.obv.die 56?, rev. die 59 [this die], 0 specimens known for die combination], cf.Randazzo Hoard 119). Very good - fine and rare.

The specimen comes from a recent hoard as are several other examples from Syracuse that are in this sale.
