No 1559 Charles Inglis 93rd Highlanders on first medal, Chas Inglis 93rd Highlanders on second, 1559 Corpl C.Inglis 93rd Foot on third, 1559 Corpl C.Inglis 93 Highlanders on last medal. First and last medals engraved, second and third medals impressed. Nearly extremely fine.

1559 Cpl Charles Inglis 93rd Highlanders. Born Dunfermline Fife, attested with the 93rd at Dundee 13Mar1849 age 20yrs, occupation weaver. He saw overseas service in N.America, Crimean Campaign and E.Indies. He saw service during the Indian Mutiny at Lucknow and received his L.S.G.C. 1860-61. Discharged 21Jul1863 after 21 yrs service due `old age and long service in difficult climate'. He died at Cambusbaron 06Jan1903 aged 78 and is buried in Ballengech Cemetery. He had a daughter and son to his wife Catherine, the son followed in the family tradition and served with the 93rd becoming a Col Sgt. Battle of Balaclava 25Oct1854. The Russians endeavoured to capture the British base. A large body of Russian cavalry debouched on to the plain in front of the position occupied by the 93rd (who had been completed by the withdrawal of the detachment on the heights), a few marines and the Turks, it being the only position covering the base. They swept down in a magnificent charge and the Turks fled. The 93rd under Sir Colin in person, being formed in two ranks, opened independent fire from the right of sections, and the Russians broke and fled when within 200 yards of the `Thin Red Line tipped with steel'. Two privates of the 93rd only were wounded. Though few Russians were killed, nearly every horse and man were wounded The 93rd 2nd Bn is the only Infantry Regiment in the British Army granted the distinction of bearing the word `Balaklava' on its colours. They were to win eternal fame as The Thin Red Line at this battle. Confirmed on roll. A rare group for the `Thin Red Line' action. Together with a substantial amount of contempory family papers relating to Charles and son David, copy of service records for both, `The Thin Red Line' almanac 1908, also a framed poem dedicated to the memory of Charles Inglis.
